Are IGI-Certified Lab Grown Diamonds Legit?

IGI-Certified Lab Grown Diamonds

Are you looking to buy the man-made diamonds? If you are, you’d want the best lab grown diamonds available in the market.

And how do you ascertain you have the best? You look at the diamond grading certificate. That’s what brings IGI certificate in the picture.

The International Gemological Institute (IGI) is the world’s largest laboratory for testing and grading diamonds and gemstones. It assesses and provides reports of different types such as lab grown diamond, colored stone report, jewelry report, etc.

However, many diamond lovers aren’t aware of the IGI diamond certification and its grading process, or what importance it holds. In this article, we tell you all about IGI and why its certified lab diamonds are valuable.

What is IGI Certificate?

The International Gemological Institute (IGI) is one of the largest laboratories for testing and grading diamonds and gemstones. The institute, set up in 1975, has centers all across the globe. The laboratory assesses all types of gemstones, including lab created diamonds

The IGI certificate helps diamond retailers and vendors confirm the authenticity of diamonds. Similarly, the certificate helps customers buy lab diamonds with more confidence.

How does the IGI grade lab grown diamonds?

Just like other diamond-grading institutions such as the GIA (Gemological Institute of America), IGI also grades lab made diamonds based on the 4 cs.

Diamond grading—the process of evaluating the different qualities of lab diamonds— is a highly technical and skilled process. It requires, not just mastery and thorough knowledge, but also special equipment to help in the process of grading. That’s where IGI comes in to grade the  4Cs of diamonds — cut, color, clarity, and carat

The 4Cs of diamond grading by IGI

Cut

Whether lab created diamonds or natural, they have to be cut to achieve the desired shape. But cut doesn’t just refer to the shapes of the diamondround, princess, cushion, oval, heart, pear, etc.

The cut includes the different angles, facets, proportions, and finishing. It is one of the most important factors as it affects the brilliance and performance of the diamond.

The quality of the cut of a diamond determines how well it will reflect light. A diamond with a high-quality cut has better brilliance, sparkle and fire.

Color

Diamonds may look colorless to the naked eye, but when examined closely, they have subtle shades. The IGI grades diamond color alphabetically.

Starting from D, considered a perfect color for a diamond, moving down to E, F, G, H, and so on, the diamond color starts to get yellow or brownish.

Clarity

Another of the 4cs is clarity. Lab diamonds go through processes that involve heat, pressure, high temperature and chemical reactions. These processes can lead to inclusions (internal flaws) and blemishes (external characteristics).

IGI grades diamonds for their clarity. Flawless diamonds do not have any imperfections. Grading diamond clarity involves assessing the number, size, nature, and position of inclusions and blemishes.

Carat weight

The last of the 4Cs of diamond grading is carat weight. Carat is the weight of the diamond. One carat is 0.200 gram. Each carat can be subdivided into 100 points. Lab created diamonds can be of different sizes.

The carat weight of lab diamonds is not the only determining factor of the value of a diamond. It is possible that a low carat diamond’s monetary value is more than that of a high carat diamond. That’s because of the other Cs of the 4Cs graded by IGI—color, clarity, and cut.

Over to you: ready to buy lab made diamonds?

To answer the question, we began with: are IGI certified lab grown diamonds legit? Yes, definitely, they are.

Are you ready to buy lab grown diamonds? The next time you look for lab diamonds, you’ll know what factors to look for. Not just that, you’ll know the best way to choose diamonds is to look at the grading certificate.

IGI is one of the most recognized diamond grading institutions. Its diamond-grading report carries value. Whether lab grown or natural diamonds, a certificate from IGI can make customers' diamond-buying process easy, faster, and full of confidence.
